Do you remember what it was like reading your first novel, or picking up something that wasn’t a textbook? I cannot imagine anything more important than the books in my life. When I was growing up, as a young girl, I wanted nothing more than to read about things that were strange and foreign– fairy tales from other countries, strange things happening inside your body. I often tried escaping into the wonderful worlds of myth, legend and history that I read about.
I cannot even begin to fathom what a different person I would be without the books I read.
To me, to us–Books are creativity. Books are education. Books are empowerment.
Mari Kita Membaca is about about empowering children in rural Orang Asli communities to read, and to learn. Many indigenous communities do not own sufficient resources to give each student the books they need for their classes. Needless to say, books outside the classroom curriculum are often non-existent. How do we give back?
